A shuttering carpenter, also known as a formwork carpenter, plays a crucial role in the construction industry. Their primary responsibility is to build and dismantle the molds or "formwork" that hold concrete in place while it sets and hardens.

Here’s a breakdown of their role:

Constructing Formwork: They measure, cut, and assemble wooden, metal, or plastic molds into which concrete is poured for things like walls, slabs, beams, columns, and foundations.

Reading Blueprints: They interpret technical drawings and blueprints to ensure the formwork is built to the correct dimensions and specifications.

Supporting Structures: They ensure the formwork is strong and stable enough to support the weight of wet concrete.

Installing Reinforcements: Sometimes, they also help place reinforcement bars (rebar) or mesh within the formwork before pouring concrete.

Dismantling Formwork: Once the concrete has set, they carefully remove the formwork without damaging the structure.

Maintaining Tools and Materials: Keeping tools in good condition and managing materials like plywood, nails, and form ties is also part of their job.

In short, shuttering carpenters are essential for creating the molds that shape concrete structures, making them a key part of any construction team.

A steel fixer, also known as a rebar worker, plays a crucial role in construction by installing and securing the steel bars and mesh used to reinforce concrete structures. Here are the main duties and responsibilities of a steel fixer:

1. Reading and Interpreting Drawings
Interpret construction blueprints, engineering drawings, and bar bending schedules (BBS).

Understand structural plans to determine where and how the steel reinforcement should be placed.

2. Measuring and Cutting Rebar
Measure and cut steel bars or mesh to required lengths using tools like bolt cutters, saws, or torches.

3. Bending and Shaping Steel
Bend steel bars into required shapes using bending machines or manual tools, following the specifications from drawings or schedules.

4. Placing and Securing Rebar
Position the steel reinforcement in the correct locations.

Secure the bars together using tying wire, clips, or welding to ensure they maintain the correct position during concrete pouring.

5. Setting Out Work
Mark out and set the steel in place accurately to ensure structural integrity and compliance with design.

6. Working with Concrete Teams
Coordinate with concrete workers to ensure reinforcement is correctly placed before pouring.

May assist in positioning formwork or supporting frameworks for concrete.

7. Safety and Compliance
Follow safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.

Use appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment).

Ensure all work complies with building codes and construction standards.

8. Maintenance and Housekeeping
Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.

Keep the work area clean and organized to ensure safety and efficiency.
