A Rotating Equipment Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling mechanical equipment that has moving parts, especially in industrial settings like oil & gas, power plants, chemical processing, and manufacturing. Here's a breakdown of the typical job responsibilities:
Core Responsibilities:
Installation & Commissioning:
Install new rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, turbines, motors, and gearboxes.
Perform alignment (e.g., laser or dial indicator) and balancing tasks.
Conduct pre-startup checks and performance testing.
Inspection & Diagnostics:
Inspect equipment regularly to identify wear, vibration, noise, or potential failures.
Use diagnostic tools (vibration analysis, thermal imaging, ultrasonic testing) to assess equipment condition.
Maintenance & Repairs:
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance.
Disassemble, repair, and reassemble rotating equipment components.
Replace bearings, seals, shafts, and other worn or damaged parts.
Overhauls & Turnarounds:
Participate in planned shutdowns for major equipment overhauls.
Document and report equipment condition and repairs performed.
Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate maintenance records, equipment logs, and repair histories.
Read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and schematics.
Safety & Compliance:
Adhere to safety protocols and industry regulations.
Ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures are followed during maintenance.
Team Collaboration:
Work with engineers, operators, and other technicians to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
Provide feedback for continuous improvement and equipment reliability.
Maintenance of rotating machines refers to the routine and preventive actions taken to ensure the proper functioning, reliability, and longevity of equipment that involves rotating parts—such as motors, pumps, compressors, turbines, fans, and gearboxes. This kind of maintenance is crucial in industrial, manufacturing, and energy sectors.
Here are the main types of maintenance involved:
1. Preventive Maintenance
Scheduled checks and servicing to prevent unexpected breakdowns. This includes:
Lubrication of bearings and moving parts
Alignment and balancing of shafts
Inspection for wear and tear
Checking for vibration and noise
2. Predictive Maintenance
Uses real-time data and condition monitoring tools to predict failures before they occur:
Vibration analysis
Thermography (infrared temperature scans)
Oil analysis
Ultrasound testing
3. Corrective Maintenance
Involves repairing or replacing components after identifying issues during inspections or failures.
4. Routine Maintenance
Basic checks and services carried out regularly, like:
Tightening bolts
Cleaning components
Replacing filters or seals
Common Goals:
Avoid unplanned downtime
Extend equipment lifespan
Improve efficiency
Reduce operational costs
